For an effective deployment, organisations need to consider who will use the cameras, the environments in which they will operate, how footage will be managed and what happens when a recording becomes important evidence.
Making these decisions before deployment can help organisations choose a body-worn video solution that meets their operational requirements both now and as their needs develop.
Here are eight questions worth asking before your organisation goes live.
1. Who will actually wear the cameras?
Start with the people rather than the technology.
Which employees will use body-worn cameras and what do their working days look like?
A security officer working a long shift may have different requirements from a healthcare employee, retail worker or mobile enforcement officer.
Consider where employees work, how frequently they interact with the public, the duration of their shifts and the situations in which they are likely to activate a camera.
Understanding the role helps determine what the camera actually needs to deliver.
2. What type of camera is right for the role?
There is no reason to assume that every employee needs the same body-worn camera.
Some environments require a robust device capable of dealing with demanding operational conditions. In others, size and weight may be more important because the camera needs to be worn comfortably throughout a shift.

5. How will footage be uploaded and stored?

Organisations should establish how footage will move from the camera into secure storage and how that process will fit into employees' normal routines.

7. How will you find and manage footage later?
Imagine an incident is reported several weeks after it happened.
Can the organisation quickly identify the relevant recording?
DEMS automatically associates metadata including the user, camera serial number and date and time information with footage. Users can also manually apply configurable categories, tags, case references or incident IDs.
Recordings can then be searched and reviewed using relevant criteria.
Organisations should also establish retention requirements before deployment.
DEMS supports configurable retention periods, allowing non-evidential files to be automatically deleted following the required period while footage designated as evidential can be securely retained as required.
8. Do you need connected features?
Traditional body-worn cameras are primarily designed to record footage for subsequent review.
For some organisations, that is exactly what is required.
Others may have employees working remotely, across large estates or in situations where supervisors need greater real-time visibility.
In these circumstances, connected features may be worth considering.
